TSI proves you can still innovate commodity dietary supplement products

With four new internationally recognized certifications, TSI’s
GlucosaGreen® sets new standards for sustainable glucosamine

TSI Group is demonstrating you can still catch consumers’ attention by improving the quality and experience of a commodity ingredient. By achieving four new internationally recognized certifications for its sustainable GlucosaGreen®, the company is giving customers strong new
ways to differentiate their glucosamine brands from the competition.

GlucosaGreen® recently earned NSF’s Carbon Footprint Statement and ISCC PLUS Certified Sustainability; as well as SGS’s Non-GMO Certification and Vegan Certification (V-Level Criteria). Environmental concerns are driving a greater number of purchase decisions. Having
these certifications on product labels will assure consumers that with GlucosaGreen®, they can protect both their joints and the planet.

“The dietary supplement industry was built on products like glucosamine, and TSI has been a big part of that from the beginning,” emphasizes TSI Optimized Ingredients Product Line President Will Ji. “The fact that we keep investing in our ingredients is a true testament to what matters
most to us as a company. We want to help our brand partners succeed, we care deeply about our quality standards, and take our responsibility to the planet seriously.”

GlucosaGreen® is a greener alternative

While TSI has been a major glucosamine supplier since the late 1990s, the company was later among the first to call attention to the environmental concerns associated with traditional shellfish-derived glucosamine.

“TSI invested in developing more sustainable technology because the shellfish extraction process involves a high volume of chemical solvents, and produces tons of waste water that cannot be recycled,” explains Ji.

Launched by TSI in 2016, GlucosaGreen® is the world’s first commercially manufactured sustainable glucosamine produced by direct fermentation process technology. Made from corn, GlucosaGreen® boasts a 70% reduction in carbon footprint compared with traditional shellfish-derived options, more than 90% fewer water and hydrochloric acid input, and more than 98% fewer waste byproducts.

GlucosaGreen® is bio-equivalent to all other glucosamine sources. It is also vegetarian, kosher, Halal and can be taken by people with shellfish allergies.

This is sustainability certification done right

Ji explains that TSI wanted to make a strong statement that there is still innovation in the glucosamine space. “We saw the need for a different option, and we are doing something better. These certifications create a cohesive bundle to reinforce our quality, standards and processes.”
The four new certifications cover a broad range of concerns:

  1. Carbon Footprint Verification Statement: Issued by NSF, this is third-party verification of GlucosaGreen®’s low carbon emissions data.
  2. ISCC PLUS Certified Sustainability: Issued by NSF and ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), ISCC PLUS certification ensures that TSI’s GlucosaGreen® production complies with globally recognized sustainability and carbon emission reduction requirements, as well as physical segregation standards, throughout its supply chain.
  3. Non GMO certification: Issued by SGS after passing an on-site audit, this certification ensures that GlucosaGreen® production does not involve genetically modified organisms (GMO) from raw materials through product delivery.
  4. Vegan certification (V-Label Criteria): Issued by SGS after passing an on-site audit, this certification ensures that all stages of GlucosaGreen® production meet international standards for vegan and vegetarian products.

This is an easy environmentally conscious decision

Ji confirms that demand for GlucosaGreen® has steadily increased since its debut eight years ago. “About 80% of TSI’s glucosamine production is now sustainably produced GlucosaGreen®. TSI has already worked to get regulatory approval in most markets, making it very easy for brands to make the switch.

“Further, TSI stands ready to help our customers achieve regulatory clearances and make the consumer-friendly label changes to call attention to GlucosaGreen®’s sustainability message.”
